Make a Snake Mobile
How about making a snake mobile to mark the start of the Chinese New Year of the Snake?
You will need to print out the snake design onto thin card, as paper will not be strong enough.
You will need:
- A4 white card
- scissors
- felt tip pens
- hole punch or hole maker
- thread or wool
What you do:
- Download the snake and print it out on A4 white card.
-
Before you cut out the snake, draw in the eyes and nostrils and decorate the body with a pattern
using felt tip pens. We chose red which is a lucky colour in China, and yellow.
-
If you would like to make a pattern like ours, follow the line round making small red circles
with your felt tip pen.
-
When you get to the tail begin making small circles going back along the other side of the snake,
taking your time so that you do not smudge the ink.
- Draw a row of yellow circles down the middle of your snake between the rows of red circles.
- Cut out the snake carefully by beginning near the head and following the black line. You will not need the grey shaded parts.
-
If you wish you can decorate the back of the snake at this stage but you will not need more eyes
or a nose on the other side. We just decorated one side.
-
Use a hole punch to make a small hole about 16 cm along the snake near the edge.
-
Tie thread or wool through the hole and hang your snake mobile up. Your snake should spin round.
- If you want you could add a red paper tongue to your snake, but remember snakes have a forked tongue, rather like a thin capital letter Y. Just stick it with a dab of glue on the under side of the head so it looks as though it is coming out of the snake's mouth.
