Laying Eggs

With the nest building complete and the knowledge that there is lots of food for any babies, the egg laying can begin. The female bird begins to lay an egg each day in the new nest.

The number of eggs birds lay vary from bird to bird. A Blue Tit for example can lay between 7 and 13 eggs. Once all the eggs are laid she will sit on her eggs for about two weeks. This is known as incubation.

After the incubation period the chicks, who are blind at first, are fed by their parents until they are grown up enough to be able to look after themselves. Read how birds are raised in more detail in our Nesting Birds section.
