Great Free App for Place Value, Addition and Subtraction
Number Pieces Basic, designed for primary students, is freely available for the iPad with no in-app purchases so is ideal for school use. It is also available as a web resource which is useful for demonstration purposes if your iPad isn't linked to an interactive whiteboard.
This app is great for place value and regrouping activities. Children can build two and three digit numbers visually as an alternative to using Dienes blocks. A feature we particularly like is the ability to combine and separate blocks which is really useful for addition and subtraction activities and in particular decomposition. There are clear instructions for manipulating the pieces and also drawing tools allowing pupils to label their representations.
