Make a Tulip Card for Mother's Day

Practice cutting and folding flowers, to create this easy 3D tulip. It's a great craft extension to maths learning about symmetrical shapes, and will be a lovely card to make for Mother's Day.

Make a Tulip Card for Mother's Day

It's a pretty Mother's Day flower idea that's perfect for spring, and is easily adapted to different colours, so children will enjoy getting creative!

You will need:

  • A4 piece of light blue card
  • A4 piece of coloured paper. We used yellow, but you can choose any colour for your flower. A lightweight paper works best (e.g. 80gsm).
  • A5 piece of green paper
  • White paper to print your template on
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Pencil and pen for writing a message inside

What you do:

  1. Download our template of shapes, which you will need to print out to make your tulip card. Carefully cut out the tulip, stem and leaf shapes from the template. Cut out the tulip shapes
  2. Use the tulip template to cut four flowers from the coloured paper. You will need at least four of the same colour. Take care to plan out your cutting first, to fit them all on the one A4 sheet. Cut out four flower shapes
  3. Fold all the flower shapes in half, vertically along the line of symmetry, from the middle of the bottom, to the middle point at the top. Fold each flower
  4. Now start sticking the flower shapes together, to form the 3D tulip. Fold the first tulip over, to the left so that you only see a left-hand half of the shape. Put glue on this side. Stick the flowers together
  5. Take a second flower shape with the fold opened up, lie it on top of the glue, sticking it back-to-back with the first flower shape, lining the shapes up carefully. Stick the flowers together
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the remaining two flower shapes to create a tulip that opens out a bit like a 3D fan. Stick the flowers together
  7. Now use the stem and leaves template pieces to cut out the shapes from green paper. Cut out the stem and leaves
  8. Curl over the tips of the leaves, for a realistic look. Try rolling the tip around your finger or a pencil, to get the effect. Curl the tips of the leaves
  9. Use the light blue card to make your card base. Fold it in half to make a card shape. Write inside with a Mother's Day message, if you like. Write lightly in pencil first, and then go over it with a pen. Our greeting says “Happy Mother's Day”. Fold the card and write your greeting
  10. Glue the green stem piece at the bottom of your card front. Also add glue to the backs of the leaves, taking care not to add it to the bend-over tips. Then stick these in place, either side of the stem. Glue the stem and leaves to your card
  11. Finish off your card by gluing the flower piece on top of the stem. The folds of the flower can be opened out so it lies flat and so that you can apply the glue easily to the back of the 3D flower. Make sure the top of the tulip is stuck down at the top of the card. Glue the flower to the top of the stem
