Christmas Cards
In the weeks coming up to Christmas, post offices in the United Kingdom handle millions of Christmas cards.
These are greetings cards with a design which celebrates Christmas. Their designs can range from scenes relating to the birth of Jesus to pictures of wintery weather or pictures of Santa Claus. Some Christmas cards are sold for charity raising money for good causes.
But how did it all start? In 1843 John Horsley made the first Christmas cards for Sir Henry Cole who was too busy to write to his friends over Christmas. They were printed in black and white and then coloured by hand. People began sending cards in Victorian times when the 'Penny Post' postal service began.
Nowadays people often include a letter in the card to let their friends know all their latest news.
